We’re celebrating the first Made in UK Day
As the appetite to shop locally and support local businesses grows, we’re taking part in the first-ever Made in UK Day on Tuesday 9 March 2021.
The Made in UK Day campaign has been created by Make it British to celebrate their 10 year anniversary. Started as a blog by ex-retail buyer Kate Hills to champion all the wonderful products that are made in the UK, the Make it British website has now been visited by more than 6.5 million people looking to buy UK-made products and search for UK manufacturers. This year alone has seen a 68% increase in enquiries since the UK left the EU’s single market and customs union.
UK manufacturing is currently worth £192 billion to the UK economy and employs 2.7 million people. More than 65 million people live in the UK and if everyone bought just one item made in the UK worth £20 on Made in UK Day it would be worth £1.3billion.
At Claire Elsworth Design design we print and make all our beautiful products in the UK: Our wallpapers are made in Lancashire, our prints are printed in Manchester, our 100% organic cotton Tea Towels are made in North East Wales and our cushions are made in London.
Made in UK day is a campaign to champion UK-makers and all the ways in which we can support them. By purchasing from UK-made businesses like us you are helping to:
Lower your carbon footprint
Buying products made closer to home means you can significantly reduce the number of miles something has travelled. In turn, this reduces its carbon footprint. UK-made products are often made in much smaller quantities, too. Many can be made to order, discouraging waste within the supply chain.
Save essential skills
Manufacturing requires skill. Not everyone suits working in a service-based industry. By purchasing a product that is made in the UK you are helping to save skills within local communities. Skills that would otherwise be lost.
Promote UK craftsmanship
When you buy a product that is made in the UK you are helping to preserve craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
Create job opportunities
2.7 million people work within manufacturing in the United Kingdom. When you buy a product that is made in the UK you are directly contributing to keeping someone in employment.
Boost local economies
Buying locally-made directly contributes to your local economy. Spend your money wisely and help contribute directly towards the area in which you live.
Preserve UK manufacturing
If everyone living in the United Kingdom bought just one item made in the UK worth £20 on Made in UK Day it would be worth £1.3bn! Spend your money wisely and help UK manufacturing to thrive.
Get involved in Made in UK Day
You can get involved in the campaign too by pledging to buy something that is made in the UK on 9 March and share your pictures on social media using the hashtag #madeinukday
For more information and to download a championing pack visit madeinukday.co.uk
Will you join us in celebrating UK-makers and pledge to buy UK-made on 9th March? Make sure to use the hashtag #madeinukday and follow @madeinukday to get involved.
Lockdown Decorating Mood Boards
Inspiration for home decorating with our lockdown decorating mood boards
As we head into another lockdown take in some inspiration for home decorating with our new lockdown decorating mood boards. Read on to discover what colours work well with our maximalist wallpapers for some purposeful and colourful lockdown decor inspiration.
Making our home surroundings feel relaxing and comforting has never been more important than now and can help us to stay sane together during these strange and uncertain times. Whether you are planning to finish up a few outstanding home projects or completely make over a new room, taking some time to create a sanctuary within our homes has many benefits. Not only can it help us feel occupied and creatively purposeful during this time but it can also give us a small or big (depending on the size and scale of your decorating project) sense of achievement. Pre covid we were all so busy getting on with life that we probably didn’t give much thought to how decorating made us feel, but now these small personal wins can go a long way towards helping our mental wellbeing.
Lockdown Decorating Mood Boards
I’ll be posting lots of new lockdown decorating mood boards over the next few weeks of lockdown to give you different colour palettes options for all ten of our wallpapers designs. Some are bright and bold, some more subtle and some are dark and moody. When choosing colours for a room finding a wallpaper you like can be a great starting point. Start by focusing on the colours and hues within the design that you are most drawn to and collect and curate images from different sources, add in samples to build up your own mood board. I find colour inspiration from all sorts of sources such as texture, architecture, photography and nature, particularly on Pinterest (more on Pinterest later).

Use these colour palettes as a guide
Take inspiration from our first four lockdown decorating mood boards for colour palettes ideas that compliment our ‘Peacock Maximalist’ and ‘Wisteria Jungle’ wallpaper designs. There are no hard and fast rules here and how you choose to interpret them is up to you. Use them as a starting point to play with colours. Remember you can add colours to a room in all sorts of ways:
- With wallpapers, wall murals, wall hangings
- By using paint on walls, ceilings and woodwork or on furniture
- With large and small scale furniture pieces such as sofa’s, chairs, bookcases, pouffes, tables, sideboards.
- Via textile accessories such as cushions, throws, rugs, curtains or blinds.
- Colour can also be added through ornaments and home accessories such as vases, candles, artwork etc.
- Don’t forgot lighting too, whether you opt to add colour with a vibrant lampshade or a contemporary light fitting.
- Use real and/or faux plants to add colour and bring the outside in to delight the senses.
Creating your own inspirational mood boards
Pinterest is an excellent tool for creating your own lockdown decorating mood boards where you can can pull all sorts of inspiration together to create your own boards. You can find all four of these beautiful mood boards on our Pinterest here. Or feel free to pin them straight from this blog article. Have a good nosey at our Pinterest boards and don’t forget to follow us for a whole host of maximalist interiors inspiration.
We recommend ordering a sample piece of wallpaper first before committing to purchasing full rolls. Having a sample means you can test it out in situ and see if you actually like it. You can also see how if fairs in different lighting conditions. Use your wallpaper sample to create a physical mood board along with any other samples you may have collected such as paint colours and fabric swatches for curtains, blinds and upholstery. Once you have your colour palette sorted stick to it when choosing your other room elements and accessories.
Ordering a wallpaper sample
If you would like to order a sample of our ‘Peacock Maximalist’ wallpaper click here and for ‘Wisteria Jungle’ Wallpaper click here. Samples can be ordered from us for all of our wallpaper designs. We’ve recently increased the sample size width to 52cm wide by 25cm length so you have a good size to play with and to chop up for your own mood boards.

Christmas Gifts Guide – Cushions for Christmas
Crazy about cushions or know someone who is? Our eco luxury maximalist cushions make a perfect Christmas gift.
Working from home means many of us are spending more time in our own homes, adapting them to accommodate this and changing our home decor to make us feel good within them. So if you are cushion crazy or know someone who is consider a luxury eco cushion made in England as thoughtful gift this Christmas. And on that note even though 2020 has been a crazy year that we’d all rather forget, we’ve still got Christmas to look forward to!
Cushions are a versatile way to make a change in many rooms, think anywhere you have some kind of seating like beds, sofas and chairs etc. They can easily create a feeling of relaxation and comfort, cosy up a corner or add a touch of luxury. Striking cushions can be a great starting point to inspire new colour schemes for tired rooms which is great for those undertaking home renovations or redecorating. Also a well crafted and beautiful statement cushion can even make you smile and feel good when you look at it, especially if that cushion is a thoughtful gift from someone special this Christmas.
Whether you are cushion lover with an array of eclectic cushions, or a cushion connoisseur with one or two carefully chosen investment pieces, I hope this post gives some Christmas gift inspiration for the cushion obsessive in your life (which might well be you) or at the very least some maximalist eye candy to brighten your day!
